Environmental Warrant of Fitness

EWOF -- environmental recognition for business sites

5 June 2008 -- Prescott Horn Limited in association with CUSP is pleased to announced their plans to release EWOF in late 2008. EWOF is based on a warrant of fitness concept and will provide recognition for businesses based on the performance of their business site or premise. EWOF is designed for small and medium sized businesses who make up the majority of New Zealand businesses. These businesses collectively have a large environmental impact but often find that the current range of environmental management certification systems aren't within their reach. The EWOF will appeal to a variety of organisations:

  • very small businesses who cannot afford the costs involved in implementing a full environmental management system (i.e. less than 20 staff).
  • single sites providing services who want to show their commitment to their customers and stakeholders (e.g. retail stores, petrol station, gym).
  • small and medium businesses who intend to implement an environmental management system when their business expands but require a simple approach to gather momentum and employee motivation in the interim.

EWOF aims to be a feeder for other environmental management certification programmes. There has been a low uptake of formal environmental management certification in New Zealand. Particularly, in small and medium sized businesses. The plan is that EWOF participants will be encouraged to take a step further and 'graduate' to other programmes such as ISO14001:2004, Enviro-Mark, and Green Tick.
